Discover the many assets of our rural surroundings

Our Bed & Breakfast is the perfect base to explore Boezinge, Ypres and its surroundings. Put on your walking shoes or jump on your bike to discover the rich war history of the region. Or follow one of the many cycling routes in the area that offer you a surprising view of the rural surroundings. You can also go out by car and discover numerous picturesque Westhoek villages. With the following tips, your holiday will be filled in no time!

Hiking

Entry point North

Where the windmills adorn the horizon, stands the Klein Zwaanhof. This farmstead sits on two British trenches dating from 1915 and 1917, and is the starting point for your exploration of a piece of frontline territory in the north of the Ypres Salient.

The 2.8 km walk takes you along a series of commemorative trees representing the Allied front line. The route also takes in two military cemeteries: Colne Valley and Caesar's Nose.

Yorkshire Trench & Dug-Out is the highlight of this walk. Via the Writers' Path you walk towards the restored trench which was only discovered in 1992. History lies right at your feet here and leaves a deep impression.

Sas van Boezinge & Fort Saint-Nicolas

About 5 kilometres from our B&B you will find the Sas van Boezinge. This historical exploration point is adjacent to the nature reserve Fort Saint-Nicolas. Since 2013 this area is owned by Natuurpunt Westland. The organisation transformed the wild area into a paradise for water animals, songbirds, woodpeckers, hares and hikers.

Start your walk at the Sas that was built around 1640 on the Ypres-Iser canal. In the Sas, boats could bridge a height difference of 7 metres, which was quite unique for that time. Near the Sas, a fort was built to protect its strategic location. The Sas and Fort Saint-Nicolas have been protected monuments since 24 November 1995.

For many local walkers, the Sas van Boezinge is the ideal place to take a break in nature. You are welcome there too! Be sure to look for the abandoned green Volkswagen van. It is not entirely clear where the van came from. Presumably it was once placed there as a hideout to hunt ducks from. Now it is mainly a place where hikers can stop to enjoy the beautiful surroundings.

Cycling

The Westhoek, a paradise for cyclists

In the Westhoek you will find numerous cycling routes that take you along the most beautiful places. Our Bed & Breakfast lies strategically between two junctions (26 and 64). Via these nodes you can reach the centre of Ypres in three ways: along the water (9 km), through the bicycle tunnel (6 km) or via the Pilkemseweg (5 km).

Westtoer also put together a 'Back2Front-route'. This cycle route starts at our B&B and takes you on a tour of 38 km. On the back of the brochure you will find a brief explanation of the sights along the route. The bicycle route is ready for you upon arrival, free of charge!

Finally, we like to inspire you with our own bicycle brochure in which you will find many nice tips to discover the surroundings by bicycle. We also composed two cycling routes that start and end at our B&B: one for nature lovers and one for food lovers. You can download the brochure for free via our homepage.

Merkem

This quiet polder village is well hidden in the IJzer valley and charms with the natural beauty of the Broeken area. Go out and visit the Beukelaremolen, the only remaining and still working mill in Merkem that once had 7. Here too, stories from the First World War are lurking around the corner. In Kloosterstraat, for example, you will find the Epernonbunker, where 18 Belgian soldiers lost their lives after a German counterattack.
